A good idea in theory. However this room felt like it hadn't passed the test of time. Definitely in need of some TLC.
The hosting was a little bizarre too, this didn't really put us at ease.
This is good fun - I like that there are some more physical aspects than in most rooms. Lots of cool tech going on, and the host was nice (even though we didn't really need her).
Feels like an attempt was made to be creative by not having any padlocks but it feels cheaply done with broken tech and a tacky set. Some of the puzzles were cool, but others either didn't work (items got stuck etc) or were super fiddly. Non-linear so good to split up and all work on something, but the space is kinda small. GM was enthusiastic and friendly
Not our usual kind of escape room - there are no padlocks in here and it's not linear. Quite a lot of tech and some quirky bits and bobs that were really good fun. The space is a tight squeeze but fine for two of us. Staff here are really nice and really enthusiastic, which always makes for a good experience.
We wanted to find a room suitable to do as a larger group and this one ticked the box. There was so much to do in this room I wonder if we'd have finished in time as our normal team size of 2. There is a large variety of different types of puzzles to keep the whole team engaged, there's something for everyone.
Great use of tech too.
This room's a little more straightforward than their other room. We still enjoyed it, but as experienced solvers, I think we'd prefer something meatier.
Semi-Super-Sleuthing
Can You Escape? offers a tidy 20% discount for students. I came to play H.E.R.O with another two newbies: the Game Operator was lively and did a good job of getting us into the room’s plot.
Story
Free a group of fellow superheroes captured by evil mastermind Möbius before they disappear forever.
Puzzles
This is not your conventional escape room: rather than working out codes and finding keys, there are a series of challenges scattered about the room that must be completed. In this sense, it’s much more like The Crystal Maze, and the tasks are therefore very practical. Some were fairly fun, but a few struck me as basic.
Mise-en-scène
I can accept it was a superhero hideout or whatever as it was dimly light and hi-tech-looking. The capes we were given to wear was a nice touch.
Final Comments
We ran out time on the final challenge- sad! Since my friends were both first-timers, if I’d have known this wasn’t a traditional type of escape room, I would have picked another one as I personally prefer those. I also think that they walked away with the wrong impression of what escape rooms actually are.

Operation H.E.R.O. is an escape room with buckets of charm, and we had a great time playing it. It’s a great room for enthusiasts looking for a different challenge, or absolute beginners who may benefit from a little handholding, with a fun story to boot. It was definitely the right choice of room to try on our trip to York, and if our visit weren’t so short I’d have booked in to play their second room right away! So far I’ve personally played around half of all the escape rooms available in York, and Operation H.E.R.O. is my favourite.
