Each year brings a new crop of titles from the EXIT line of boxed escape games, a reliably polished product that faithfully follows their established format while managing to feel fresh and free from recycled puzzle ideas. The latest batch of boxes includes a couple that are rated at 2/5 difficulty, lower than any of their previous games, perhaps as an attempt to broaden their appeal to less hard-core puzzle enthusiasts. Playing The Sunken Treasure is about as close as you can get to taking a real trip out on a boat, strapping into a scuba kit and diving for treasure. That is of course assuming that underwater shipwrecks are usually covered in puzzles, and you have a handy cipher wheel to help you. I mean, I’ve never been scuba diving. I have no idea.

One small change can greatly impact how a game feels. The Sunken Treasure had entirely linear gameplay. This departure from Exit The Game’s semi-linear approach to tabletop escape game design created a smooth and calm puzzling experience. I found it pleasurable.

Another great hit from the Exit series! Sunken Treasure will have all you scallywags hunting for the loot of yer dreams! But first you’ll need to prove your worth by solving a few puzzles and traps along the way.
