‘The Debtors of 1850’ is no ordinary experience. Housed within the original walls of what was once the Debtor’s Prison, this attraction invites groups of 2 to 6 participants to step into the shoes of 19th-century inmates desperately trying to gather the money to pay off their debt. Will their flair and fortitude, as well as a little help from other characters in the prison, see them make good what they owe and be released before the gate is locked for the night?

Perfectly themed around the Inveraray Jail this is an excellent escape game and well worth the 90-ish minute drive from Glasgow to get to.  We were welcomed by your host in character as a prison guard, and led up to our cell in the debtors prison and told that we we wanted to get out then we had to repay out debt, so you need to find/earn or 'borrow' enough coins to gain your freedom.

The gameplay here is open with plenty to do , so it lets larger teams all  do something at the same time. There's a good mix of puzzle types, from tasks and logic puzzles, to searching/observation and dexterity challenges. The entire game is very low tech, what you'd expect in 1850, but this works to the games advantage as it allows the game to be adapted to the team, enthusiasts will be rewarded less for each task when they're blasting through the puzzles, but new teams who are struggling can be rewarded more for each completed task so that they don't completely fail the room. For a tourist attraction where almost all players will be families or newbies then this is an inspired feature.

This is probably the best game we've played at a historical attraction, and I hope Inveraray Jail have great success with it. Oh, and extra thanks to the  jail staff who allowed our dog to accompany us in the room, the  jail is dog friendly but the escape room isn't (officially). Send an email before you go to ask.

Finally, the Jail tour is well worth doing while you're there. and if you want food then the George Hotel next door makes a cracking Sunday lunch (but book in advance), and is also dog friendly.
