In a way, it could be that it's just not a puzzle book for me. But there's also that little voice telling me that it wasn't just about me. Also the book itself is reason to not like it that much. Some puzzles were definitely good and well thought out, but with too many of them I felt disappointed even after knowing the answer. Alternative answers were just as good and often it's just a matter of trying different alternatives and see which one was the 'correct' one. I also didn't like the external knowledge part. For web-based games I don't mind going to Google to help finding an answer, but when puzzles are in a physical book, I want to be able to solve them with just that book.

All in all, great artwork, some great puzzles but overall, definitely not the 'standard in the scene' anymore.

I originally decided not to write a review for Journal 29, because it never claims to be an escape game - quite correctly so in my opinion. So many publishers are jumping on the 'escape game' description because it's hot at the moment, but it's often used purely for marketing with little justification. Worse is when a home game copies conventions from real life escape rooms that make the product worse - such as the one-hour time limit, which is unnecessarily short for a home game.
Dear diary, some day people will wonder what happened here. I could tell them, or I could leave a bunch of cryptic puzzles. Yup, definitely going to go the cryptic puzzle route.
A challenging puzzle book that can be taken with you, even to the ice cream shoppe!
On the whole this is a lot of fun. It’s well thought out and proves a challenge to many. The only downside is the puzzles are hide really do require a massive logical leap, the kind we would often complain about if it was found in an Escape Room. Regardless of this, it’s a sold game to keep you entertained.

If you’ve never done a puzzle book like this before, I would recommend that you pick up Tachyon first. It’s basically the exact same kind of book, but with a tighter theme and tighter puzzles. If you get through that and are dying for more puzzle book action, then Journal 29 is worth picking up, just expect a bit more frustration than the former.
