This wasn’t a bad game, and in places it was fun. Unfortunately the one GM for two games decision is what let our experience down. I understand that this is probably due to financial reasons but we’re yet to play at a company who runs this way and offers a better experience than one GM for one game.
Overview
This was our first visit to Red House in Exeter, having completed both rooms at their sister company in Torquay. We enjoyed our visits to Torquay so we were looking forward to taking on the newly produced Danziger Experiment.
Although it is tucked away, there is a car park a couple of minutes down the road so no issues getting there or getting parked even though it’s in the middle of Exeter. We were greeted by Angel and we were taking to a old cinema style reception area for the briefing. We were told the one of us would be separated from the group to start with and I was nominated for this. The briefing was given to us about stopping the experiment going wrong and having to escape all together. Covid rules had gone by the time of our visit so no need for masks but there was hand sanitiser if we wished to use it.
Room impression
I was taken into a very small room on my room. Warning- if you do not like small spaces then don’t nominate yourself to go in alone. I was told that the team could see me but I could t see them. My room was very basic and lacked a quality finish to it. The rest of the team had a lab set out with everything working as it should and all props in a good enough quality. The door in my room did not shut for a few moments which dampened the start as Angel had to try and fix the mag lock. This also hampered us later in the game.
Puzzles
Whether we over complicated the clues in this game or I just didn’t turn up for the first half, I could not get out of my room for far too long. In the end, Angel had to give me a couple of hints in the radio as she could see I was struggling:l. The clues were very straightforward but I was over complicating things. Once we were all together the game flowed very quickly. The puzzles were not tricky at all and did not take a lot of thinking. There’s aren’t many locks in this room or hidden codes. The end puzzle was good although as previously mentioned the mag lock did not appear to work correctly when we thought we had escaped and had to get Angel in the radio to confirm with her that we had in fact escaped.
Game Master Clues
As mentioned, Angel could see I was struggling at the beginning and gave me some hints over the radio. The rest of the team was not allowed to ask for help until I had joined them, which dragged out the beginning a lot longer than was needed. There was no tv screen for hints and a clock on the wall appeared after we all got together. The only way of communication for hints was the radio. Once we all got together we did not need any hints as we got through the room pretty quickly.
Round Up
Although we escaped, we all agreed afterwards that we didn’t really enjoy this room too much. Webster that was because we were separated for half of it, again mainly my doing, but we didn’t quick get into the game. The ending did slightly ruin it for us as we thought we had escaped but had to speak to Angel about it over the radio and it was a bit of duff ending. The mag lock not working at the beginning for me wasn’t a major issue but just didn’t start things off great. The game isn’t that tricky at all and doesn’t require a lot of thinking and we over complicated a lot of it. We did enjoy the Torquay rooms more than the Danziger and we don’t know whether we will rush back to complete the other room in Exeter but it was an easy game to get into and we have certainly done worse.
Worth doing if you are in the area but not our favourite and do the Torquay rooms, especially the last train to Paris!!
